Visit to Buzău and Bacău

October 2008

Ambassador Robin Barnett met with key Buzău and Bacău officials and visited Wagon Automotive and Agricola SA. He also participated in a tree planting event.

Below is his account of the visit:

'First of all, I saw an impressive new British investor, Wagon Automotive, which makes specialised parts for luxury cars on a green field site near Pogoanele, Buzău. Although Wagon moved in only recently, the local workforce is already producing parts to demanding quality standards. They already plan to expand their operation and are optimistic about their future in Romania, even if green field sites inevitably pose some challenges.

Next, I participated in a fantastic initiative to plant thousands of trees in Comăneşti, Bacău to replace a forest that had been gradually cut down. This deforestation later resulted in serious flooding that left many families homeless until the Government and local authorities stepped in. I was very proud to join people ranging from Prime Minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu and Environment Minister Korodi to school students in making a small contribution to restoring this forest and protecting the environment. Deforestation is a serious issue and a real threat to future of our planet.

My visit concluded with a visit to Agricola SA’s new salami factory. The whole operation is computerised and provides conclusive proof that Romania can is produce food products to the highest European health and safety standards. However, the most important issue is of course the taste. I am delighted to report that their Sibiu salami was quite delicious!'
