UK bilateral support
The UK has been a consistently strong supporter of Romanian efforts to meet EU standards, both before, and after, accession. Over the last 5 years, the UK has provided Romania with around £3,800,000 (Euro 4,800,000) worth of bilateral projects, utilising various UK Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) funds.
These projects have helped the Romanian Government reform its judicial system and administration, tackle corruption and organised crime, and secure its borders. The funds have also assisted local charities working with children, the disabled, and the Roma.
The bulk of this funding came from the FCO’s Strategic Programme Fund’s (SPF – formerly known as the Global Opportunities Fund), Reuniting Europe Programme. The principal aim of the programme is to support countries with the necessary reforms for EU accession. Details of past and current projects can be found below.
