Embassy history

British Embassy building

UK Embassy building in Bucharest

The building of the British Embassy in Bucharest, located at 24 Jules Michelet was purchased in 1908 from it previous owner, a Romanian gentleman named WJ Alexandrescu.

A further addition to the existing building which would provide an additional level over a single storey extension of the old building was completed in 1928. An annex was added to the then Legation building in 1937.

The November 1940 earthquake caused serious damage to the building which had to undergo significant repairs. The building emerged from the World War Two in quite good shape, causing a visiting Foreign & Commonwealth Office architect in the 1950s to report that 'the premises look in good order and compared with adjoining properties, [the building’s] appearance is excellent'.

In 1972 a prefabricated building adjacent to the Chancery was added which for a while housed the British Council and the Visa Section. This one storey annex was replaced in 1992 by a two storey building which now houses the Visa and the EU Sections.

In 2005, following extensive restoration works, the Embassy’s building was given its current two-tone façade.
