Prince Charles: Transylvania, an agricultural treasure (05/06/2009)

His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales returned to the heart of Romania, in Mures County, in May 2009, to meet local producers and open an
ecological food-processing unit (Photo: Andreea Bell, Fundatia ADEPT).

Located in Saschiz village, the so-called 'food barn' is a model food-processing unit for small-scale producers who will from now on be able to sell their
traditional recipes more widely, and at European safety and hygiene standards.

The Prince of Wales noted on the occasion:
'This wonderful project has been funded by Fundatia ADEPT with the support of the local community of Saschiz and it is a great example, I think, of the
combined wish of local communities, the Romanian government and the European Commission to preserve local and traditional food. As I know, you are all only too aware, Transylvania is an agricultural treasure, combining a remarkably rich wildlife with natural and high quality food made by local producers. I feel strongly that the area can teach the world so much about sustainable food production.'

Fundatia ADEPT’s mission is to increase rural incomes through traditional farming methods whilst protecting the enormously important natural and cultural landscape in Transylvania.  Find out more about their work, including the Tarnava Mare brand, at www.discovertarnavamare.org and www.fundatia-adept.org.

Another project supported by the Prince of Wales is the 'Carpathian Secretariat', which aims to improve living standards for people in rural communities. The Secretariat will be attached to the Romanian Government and focuses on agriculture, tourism, forests, environmental protection, financing and micro-loans, energy and education.
